Open Very Carefully: A Book with Bite

Open Very Carefully

Title:  Open Very Carefully:  A Book with Bite

Author:  Nick Bromley

Illustrator:  Nicola O’Byrne

Summary:

What begins as a retelling of “The Ugly Duckling” quickly spirals into complete chaos in Open Very Carefully. As the story begins, the narrator notices a tail at the edge of the page—a very spiky, dangerous looking tail. It turns out a crocodile has somehow made his way inside the book, and it’s up to the reader to find a way to chase him out. Open Very Carefully invites reader participation; readers must rock the book and shake it in all different directions. It also explores the ways the text on the page and even the physical book itself can be used to tell a story. Sentences swirl around the crocodile’s head as he eats them up, and his final escape leaves a real hole in the back of the book. This is a great read-aloud and a great book to look at and explore.
