Author: Monica Kulling

Illustrator:  Bill Slavin

Nikola Tesla grew up in Croatia and dreamed of one day harnessing the power of the Niagara Falls. As a young man, he moves to New York City in hopes of working with Thomas Edison. When he arrives, he fixes an ocean liner and Edison promptly offers him a job. However, Tesla wants to build a motor that runs with an alternating current while Edison has invested his time and money in building direct currents. The two disagree on the future of electricity and Tesla loses his job. He soon meets George Westinghouse and they begin work on alternating currents. The pair win the contract to light the World’s Fair in Chicago and eventually go on to harness the power of the Niagara Falls and send power 20 miles away.
